a color story: squidward and turquoise

does squidward's color have anything to do with his personality? kind of.

On the show,  "Spongebob Squarepants", one of the main characters, Squidward had an odd color. He was an octopus which are naturally, light brown/beige and even gray but the show displayed Squidward as turquoise. From my memory, I thought he was gray for his grumpy demeanor.

Why did the creators choose this color for Squidward and why does this work?

Squidward enjoyed painting his self portraits, a quite environment and playing his clarinet. He worked at the Krusty Krab as a cashier and despised it. Squidward also lived between SpongeBob and Patrick. Squidward's colleague and neighbor, SpongeBob often annoyed him; one of Squidward's favorite catchphrases was

"Is it time already for you to ruin my day?"

Although they lived in the same neighborhood and worked at the same restaurant, I noticed that Squidward's personality would quite differ from SpongeBob. Actually, it was their attitude towards their work and their life that makes SpongeBob, as SpongeBob and Squidward as Squidward.  I compared their phrases when each encountered a similar situation.

Squidward stayed in bed,

"Wake me up when I care" or

"I knew I shouldn't have gotten out of bed today"

Jumped out of bed for SpongeBob,

"I'm ready, I'm ready."

At the Krusty Krab, Squidward welcomed guests with pessimism,

"Welcome to the Krusty Krab, where it's almost as if the evolutionary clock ticks backwards."

SpongeBob, who is a fry cook, approached work with excitement:

"Krusty Krab Pizza, it's the pizza for you and meeeeee!" "If you believe in yourself, with a tiny pinch of magic all your dreams can come true!" SpongeBob.

Lastly, Squidward felt stuck.

"I order the food, you cook the food, the customer gets the food. We do that for forty years and then we die." Squidward

SpongeBob felt limitless,

"With imagination, you can be anything you want."

We could go on and on. SpongeBob was the anti-Squidward. Or, Squidward was the anti-SpongeBob.

Then... it clicked. I googled "what is the complimentary color to yellow?" According to this link

Leafy green and serene blue are complementary colors to yellow.

Turquoise. The "skin" color of Squidward.

If the colors yellow and turquoise complimentary relationship came before the show's popularity, Squidward was a color-driven character. A food for thought eh.

Without Squidward, SpongeBob's bright energy couldn't be appreciated by the viewers. If you come to think of it, SpongeBob's best friend, Patrick Star was not the ideal wingman. Squidward was.

"Fortunately, I have enough talent for all of you."

Squidward.
